You may not know it, but there are plenty of inexpensive ways to incorporate useful and decorative pieces into your home. Luckily, Lerner Springs at Reston has compiled a list of fun and useful DIY projects, perfect for any home. All of the supplies needed for these DIY projects can be found in one of the many shopping areas, just a short drive from Lerner Springs at Reston.

1.     Chalkboard

If you have an old picture frame lying around and you’re not sure what to do with it, turn it into a chalkboard! All you need to do is paint the frame with a color of your choice, and then paint the glass using chalkboard paint. The picture frame can be any size and style. Hang the chalkboards around your home, leaving reminders or quotes wherever you desire!

2.     Bulletin Board

To make your own bulletin board, you’ll need a picture frame, rolls or squares of cork and some fabric if you want the board to have a design on it. Begin by removing the glass and cardboard backing from the picture frame. After sanding the frame, you can paint over it using any color you choose. Next, attach the cork to the frame’s cardboard backing using spray adhesive. Use the spray adhesive to stick a fabric of your choice to the cork to add some design and flair to the board. Once these steps are completed, stick the newly finished corkboard in the frame and tack on pictures, reminders and anything else you need!

3.     Bar Cart

If you’ve been looking to buy a bar cart but it’s out of your price range, consider this DIY bar cart, sans wheels. Before beginning this project, you will need a few items. You’ll need a lacquer rectangular tray, decorative corners, drawer pulls (for decoration) and a tray stand. Begin by screwing the drawer pulls into the sides of the tray. Then, glue the decorative edges onto the corners using crafting glue and let it dry for two to three hours. Once it is dry, place the tray on the tray stand and voila! Your bar cart is complete and ready for the party!

4.     Necklace Holder

For this project, you will need a flat board and a few furniture knobs. One good option to use as a flat board is a piece of wood. Measure and drill holes into the wood, according to the size of each knob. Next, attach the knobs and then hang all of your necklaces on each one. This is the perfect way to put your jewelry on full display and keep your necklaces from getting tangled together.

5.     Coasters

There are plenty of DIY coasters out there, but one of the quickest and easiest options use only two materials: laminate floor samples and paint chips. If you recently moved, chances are you have these materials lying around. If not, you can pick them up at a local home improvement store. All you have to do is secure the paint chips to the floor samples using shellac. Once this is done, your coasters are ready to use!

6.     Elegant Bedside Table

If you follow these steps, you can transform your plain nightstand into one with elegance and flair. All you need is marble self-adhesive paper and a knob of your choice. Using a brass knob rather than the knob already included on the piece of furniture will make it stand out and look more sophisticated. Simply stick the self-adhesive paper onto the surface of the nightstand and attach the knob and you won’t even recognize your nightstand!
